Not so many watches are suitable for all occasions so why not invest a few less expensive watches but not to share all your cash on one.
If you are going to invest everything in one watch, do not follow fashion. A fashionable watch is just that, fashionable now but how will it look in six or twelve months time? A watch is a long-term purchase so think long term, think stylish rather than fashionable, think understated elegance rather than designer names and bling.
For everyday wear, a simple, large-face analogue watch with a stainless steel wristband combines satisfying weight with practicality and don’t cost the earth. Brands such as Seiko, Tissot, Rotary and Fossil watches can be bought for a couple of hundred dollars, more desirable models will cost several times that. Think Swiss Army and Tag Heuer. Look for understated elegance when buying a watch for everyday wear, avoid loud and brash. If you’re splashing out, it doesn’t necessarily need to be a Rolex, there are other brands that are equally as impressive and probably more so to those in the know.
For evening wear, what about something more subdued, maybe a watch with a leather strap. If your day time watch is chunky, why not look for a slimmer watch with an elegant, rectangular face. If you’re not wearing diamonds on your hands, don’t have them on your watch. If you’re wearing a watch with a leather strap, ensure the colour of the strap matches your belt and shoes.
If you’re looking for something more innovative, some designers are making watches with rubber and plastic. There are some acceptable looking digital watches available but not many. Consider everything but buy Classic. Everybody you meet will form some opinion of you based on the watch you are wearing.
